NSBE Jr. Chapter Highlights - May 2008

The University of Alabama's NSBE Jr. Chapter

Updated on

This month's featured chapter is from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The University of Alabama's NSBE Jr. chapter hails from Region 3. They have become an involved NSBE Jr. chapter and have been rewarded by being the first NSBE Jr. chapter showcased on the NSBE Jr. Chapter Highlights page.

The University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, NSBE, Jr. Chapter was chartered on July 25, 2007 as a citywide chapter with Cornerstone Full Gospel Baptist Church serving as its primary headquarters in ‘the Manor’.  Already in its first official year it has amassed a membership of 150 members representing over 15 schools in the city and county and has several affiliate members in 5 additional states.  This past year, members of the UAT-NSBE, Jr. Chapter have participated in every regional event, including our Regional Leadership Conference (RLC), and held weekly study halls and monthly meetings to stimulate professionalism, increase awareness, and to help our members take ownership of the NSBE mission.  The UAT-NSBE, Jr. Chapter has partnered with the Selma High School “Mechanical Minds”, the F.E.A.-UAB NSBE, Jr. chapter, Cornerstone’s ‘Contagious’ Youth Ministry, as well as the University of Alabama (UANSBE) Chapter to support these efforts.

This year, under the leadership of President Brenda “Ms. 2014” Jordan and an excellent advisory committee, the UAT-NSBE, Jr. Chapter plans to ‘raise the bar’ by completing several incomplete tasks while tackling new challenges and strengthening the quality of its membership.  A few of these challenges include an ‘Alternative Careers’-Job Fair, a “Run-and-Suit” mentoring day at a local men’s store, ‘Where’s Your Stamp?’(passport signup for 2010!), the ”Summer Take Off” (encouraging participation in 3 local summer programs and other programs around the nation), supporting our Region 3 Summer Camping Conference (SCC) to be held in Tuscaloosa, hosting and implementing a local A Walk for Education (AWFE) and a local Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) camp…and maybe even throwing a citywide party, “to positively impact the community”!
