NSBE Jr. Chapter Highlights - July 2008

The Mount Airy Baptist Church NSBE Jr. Chapter

Updated on

This month's featured chapter is from Washington, DC. The Mount Airy Baptist Church Jr. chapter hails from Region 2. They have become an involved NSBE Jr. chapter and have been rewarded by being one of the first NSBE Jr. chapters (and the first chapter highlighted from Region 2) showcased on the NSBE Jr. Chapter Highlights page.

Congratulations to Mount Airy Baptist Church FIRST LEGO League and Junior FIRST LEGO League teams on their participation in the Maryland State FLL Championship and JFLL Expo at the University of Maryland Baltimore County on January 26, 2008. Their Junior FIRST LEGO League (JFLL) team was the recipient of the Happy Planet Award - given to a team that discovered how to keep our planet happy and healthy by using alternative energy! We explored the Japanese Robots Exhibit at the Kennedy Center (Saturday, 2/9/08). They celebrated our robotics season at the Blue and Gold Banquet on Saturday, February 23, 2008.

Members of the Mount Airy Baptist Church NSBE Jr. Chapter partnered with the Patriots Technology Training Center NSBE Jr. Chapter in Seat Pleasant, MD to participate in a hands-on, team oriented activity involving robots—The Team Engineering Design Competition.

Students in grades 6-12 came together in a team named E.M.P.O.W.E.R.D. (Engineers Maintaining Power Over Worlds Electrical Robotic Designs) to complete a design project that was exhibited and presented during the 2008 NSBE National Convention in Orlando, Florida from March 19-23, 2008. Under the guidance of advisor Denise M. Lewis, team members met on a weekly basis in the evening at the Patriots Technology Training Center.  E.M.P.O.W.E.R.D. team members included Mount Airy NSBE Jr. Chapter members Aaron Lewis III – Electrical Engineer, D'Angelo Williams – Computer Hardware Engineer and Ryan Taylor – Computer Software Engineer. Patriots members included Triston Young - Industrial Engineer, Malcolm Ryan t - Mechanical Engineer and McKay Ifeadi - Mechanical Engineer.

Chapter's Upcoming Events
After a successful 11th Annual Youth Summit on Technology in May, Patriots is pleased to offer its 11th Annual Summer Camp on Technology from June 23 through July 25, 2008. Participants will get a chance to explore technology in the science, engineering, and the medical fields, build and shoot their own rocket, program and build a LEGO robot, have fun with forensics, go on field trips and job shadow with a high-tech firm or government agency.

The Mount Airy chapter will participate in the 2008 Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) in Washington, DC and the Region 2 Summer Camping Conference in July. We will present workshops on 3D Modeling Using Google SketchUp, Programming Basics Using Sketch and Design Squad Engineering Challenge: Hidden Alarm/Dance Pad Mania during the Mount Airy Baptist Church Summer Camp in August.

Each spring, the national PCI Mini-Conference is held at the NSBE Annual National Convention.  This year’s conference featured various activities, workshops and competitions promoting academic and technical development.  A highlight of the conference was a tour of the Kennedy Space Center. Mount Airy’s NSBE Jr. Chapter members competed in the Try-Math-A-Lon (TMAL), Team Engineering Design Competition (TEDC) and PCI Science Fair (SF). Even though our teams did not place in the competitions, they displayed enthusiasm, good sportsmanship and learned a lot.
